"Dolly" was inspired by the controversial event that took place on July 5th 1996 when two scientists, Ian Wilmutt & Keith Campbell, cloned the first mammal : a sheep named Dolly. The way I approached this project was to pay strict attention to the composition by following the rule of thirds. I placed each typographical piece on or around an intersection of the rule of thirds. I decided to set the balance of the focal point a little off centered, and cropped, to give an almost jarring effect. The main focal point of the piece is the word Dolly; the lines that come from the world itself helps move the viewers eye quickly across the piece. By reading the word Dolly Your eyes are then brought to the next typographical cluster, then below it in larger font is the word cloned which I mirrored to enforce the main theme of my chosen historical event. Visually "Dolly" has a fairly even weight distribution; the typographical cluster offsets the bold focal point, easing the heavy font in this asymetrical design. I took the type cluster and played with the weight and opacity to create the shapes that I then placed behind the word Dolly. I did this to help my intended focal point stand out, and to add more visual interest.
Awesome design, however, I think the solid colored shapes are somewhat of a distraction. Maybe even just turning down the opacity a few notches could help. I'm looking forward to the final piece!
ReplyDeleteAwesome design. Love how the word "cloned" is cloned to a mirror image. I agree with the other comment that the solid lines and boxes may lead the eye to places other than you intend. But other than that great design!

ReplyDeleteI really love the design and i think you nailed the topic perfectly, but i thought we weren't supposed to use anything but text? in that aspect, the shapes and squiggles kind of confuse me, id love to see the project without these as well, but i do like how it looks with them.
